about this album
Following the album "PIGMENTS & the clarinet choir" (Yolk J2083), dedicated to the poems of Guyanese poet Léon-Gontran Damas—who, along with Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor, founded the Négritude movement— Guillaume Hazebrouck continues to pursue his dream of “Francophone jazz poetry” and delves into the world of James Noël, a leading figure in contemporary Haitian literature known as a performance poet, novelist, and founder of the journal IntranQu’îllités.
"James Noël’s poetry offers me the chance to once again explore a unique combination of instrumentalists already brought together on the previous project Pigments & the Clarinet Choir, this time augmented by the presence of vocalist Laurène Pierre-Magnani, whom I met on the opera Les Sauvages. Comprising three trios—a vocal trio (spoken word, singing, and beatboxing), a clarinet trio, and a rhythm trio (keyboards, bass, and beatboxing)—this original orchestration opens up a wide field for experimentation.”
From the collection “Le Pyromane adolescent” (Éditions Mémoire d’Encrier, 2013. Reissued by Points/Seuil, 2015), the musician selects twelve poems and immerses them in a syncretic soundscape blending jazz, contemporary music, and hip-hop. From collages and creolization emerges a musical suite where one hears the clamour of an island at the epicenter of global chaos, and where, amid blood, fire, and laughter, a new poetics of the world rises.
