career
Saxophonist, composer, and improviser Camille Maussion has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices on the contemporary jazz scene. Trained at the conservatories of Perpignan, Boulogne-Billancourt, and Paris, she has explored classical, contemporary, jazz, and improvised music repertoires before enriching her musical language through artistic encounters and long-term collaborations.
Since 2013, Camille has toured French and European venues and festivals with the Nefertiti Quartet, an emblematic group of the young jazz generation and winner of the awards: 2019 Euroradio Jazz Competition, the Jazz Migration #5 program, and Keep an Eye Records (2023, Netherlands). Through this long-standing venture, the group probes the boundaries between composition and improvisation, seeking to reconcile formal rigor with collective freedom. The quartet already has five albums to its credit: Danses futuristes (2015),Morse Code(2018), Frameless (2022) with the German label Neuklang, andLive in Paris (2023) with Berthold Records. Their fifth album, Maze in Köln, was released by Berthold Records in September 2026.
Camille next founded the duo Mamie Jotax with saxophonist Carmen Lefrançois, a bold sonic laboratory where, between composition and improvisation, they create a jubilant, demanding, and poetic two-pronged style of music. Winners of the award Jazz Migration #8, the duo released their first album on the Warning label in 2020, followed by numerous concerts in France, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Chile. Their second album, Mon cœur d'artichaut a mal aux abdos. (“My Heart of Glass’ Abs Hurt.”), was released on November 14, 2025.
Together with the guitarist Pierre Tereygeol, she created Abysskiss, a miniature orchestra of atypical instrumentation, where jazz, chamber music, vocals, and improvisation intersect. After an EP in 2022, the album Big Dipper (2025) was praised by critics for its finesse and inventiveness and received the French Jazz Academy award Prix Évidence.
In 2025, Camille began work on the first project created entirely by herself; a deeply personal concoction for a quintet, named Flocon Volcan. The album will be released on January 29, 2027, by Yolk Records, with a tour supported by the jazz center of excellence, Big Bang.
Wishing to share her love of sound and collective play, she taught saxophone and improvisation for around ten years before developing, through the Compagnie Saä, of which she is also the artistic director, workshops on free improvisation and soundpainting adapted for all audiences. She concordantly conceives musical works for young children and collaborates with storyteller Muriel Bloch on Les Contes des Enfants Extraordinaires (“Tales of Extraordinary Children” for Lunii - 2022) and Les Contes des 7 secrets (“Tales of the 7 Secrets” for Tonies - 2024). Through Baby Jotax (Mamie Jotax), Flöcön (Volcano Snowflake), and Babysskiss(Abysskiss), she adapts her repertoire for the youngest of ears.
Her passion for the intersection of performing arts has led to her collaboration with numerous artists: she participated in the musical novel Le Souffle des Marquises from 2010 to 2014 with Muriel Bloch, joined Lisa Cat-Berro's septet Solaxis in 2020 alongside Sophie Alour, Céline Bonacina, and Géraldine Laurent, has performed in François Corneloup's Le Bal du Sièclesince 2024, and has accompanied oud player and singer Mohamed Abozekry in his two Egyptian and French ensembles since 2022.
From a very young age, Camille has viewed music, and particularly improvisation, as a compelling way to connect with life. Her tenor and soprano saxophones are an extension of her voice: she considers them vocalists, through which she explores a personal and sensitive organic soundscape enriching her compositions.
