about this album
Since 2007, Poline Renou & Matthieu Donarier have been mingling a female voice and a clarinet within a duet called Kindergarten. With this ultralight and unclassifiable band, they have been restlessly questioning the notion of duetplaying" by seizing all available tools : composition, improvisation, counterpoints and rythmic cycles, text reading, acoustic scenography…
For this new creation, the duet becomes a trio, calling in Sylvain Lemêtre, an indispensable percussionist regarding his mimetic skills and collaborations (Ensemble Cairn, Ars Nova, Marc Ducret, Garth Knox, Quatuor Bela, Jean-François Vrod, Albert Marcoeur, Surnatural Orchestra…).
Today, with ADIEU MES TRÈS BELLES, this unconventional trio offers a
crossline through early european vocal musics, from the very first
medieval monodies to the polyphonies of the late Renaissance, on the
edge of Baroque music.
Both chamber musicians and improvisers, Poline Renou, Matthieu Donarier and Sylvain Lemêtre re-read and transform plain-chants, ballads, songs, motets. Some pieces are restored as close as possible to the original text, others are re-composed in total freedom.
Among this repertoire, we can hear extracts of anonymous manuscripts and pieces written by great european composers (Solage, Matteo da Perugia, Gilles Binchois, Vicente Lusitano, Claude Lejeune, Michelangelo Rossi...) enamelled with improvisations and spontaneous arrangements.
Facing this off-timemusic, questions arise : what is ancient ? What is actual ?
Hard to say.
Far from defining these codes, the three musicians answer by spanning swiftly the barriers of time and revisit this European poetry as one walks in a timeless garden.
